Build me a son, O Lord,
who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,
and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid;
one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat,
and humble and gentle in victory.

주여, 제 아들을 이렇게 만들어 주소서,
약할 때에 자기를 돌아 볼 줄 아는 강인함과
두려울 때에 자신을 잃지 않는 용기를 가지고
정직한 패배에 부끄러워하지 않고 꿋꿋하며
승리에 겸손하고 온유하게 하소서.

Build me a son
whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be;
a son who will know Thee
and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

생각해야 할 때에 고집하지 말게 하시고
주님을 알고 자신을 아는 것이
지식의 기초임을 아는 아들을 저에게 허락하여 주소서.

Lead him pray,
not in the path of ease and comfort,
but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.
Here let him learn to stand up in the storm;
here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

비오니 그를 평탄하고 안이한 길이 아니라
고난과 도전의 긴장과 자극 속으로 인도해 주옵소서.
그래서 폭풍우 속에서 분연히 일어설 줄 알고
넘어지는 사람들에 대한 연민을 배우게 하소서.


Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high;
a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men;
one who will learn to laugh,
yet never forget how to weep;
one who will reach into the future,
yet never forget the past

 
마음이 맑으며, 높은 목표를 갖고
남을 다스리려 하기전에 먼저 자신을 다스리며
소리 내어 웃을 줄 알되 울 줄도 알고
미래로 나아가되 결코 과거를 잊지않는 아들로 만들어 주소서.

 
And after all these things are his,
add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor,
so that he may always be serious,
yet never take himself too seriously.
Give him humility,
so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness,
the open mind of true wisdom,
the meekness of true strength.
 
이런 것들을 허락하신 다음,
이에 덧붙여 원하오니, 유머를 알게 하시고
인생을 엄숙하게 살아감과 동시에
인생을 즐길줄 알게 하소서.
자기 자신에 지나치게 집착하지 말게 하시고
겸허한 마음을 갖도록 하시어
참된 위대성은 소박함에 있음을 알게 하시고
참된 지혜는 열린 마음에 있으며
참된 힘은 온유함에 있음을 명심하게 하소서
 

Then, I, his father, will dare to whisper,
"I have not lived in vain."

그리하여, 나, 아버지는 어느날
내 인생을 헛되이 살지 않았노라고 감히 고백할수 있도록 도와 주소서.
